Farmers in Tonkolili district have risen up to President Julius Maada Bio’s New Direction vision by cultivating this year over 3,000 hectares of rice.
Service provider for JamJay Company, Denis Jusu reported that he alone has exceeded the target given to each district of 1,000 hectares and that combined with other farmers.
He promised President Bio that next year they will produce more in support of his clarion call to increase food production locally.
Ministry of Agriculture, Chief Agriculture Officer, Mohamed Alpha Sheriff said he was impressed with the achievement, because this was the fruit of the ministry’s policy shift aimed at putting more land under cultivation and increasing yield.
He said they are committed to providing the enabling environment for private sector investment in agriculture and reducing inefficiencies in service delivery.
Newly crowned Paramount Chief of Yoni chiefdom, Bai Shebora said he was happy with the development. He called on government to give his chiefdom more support as his people are ready to support government’s food security drive.
Master Farmer, Yeabu Koroma said she was happy for what MAFFS has done for them. However, she said that their level of cultivation cannot be harvested manual and called for MAFFS to provide combined harvesters and more fertiliser.
Since he came to power in April 2018, President Bio told the nation that transforming the agricultural sector in a drive towards food security was a priority of his New Direction government with the participation of the private sector.
