Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Trade and Industry yesterday 10th November, 2022 announced a temporal ban on the exportation of rice from the country.

The ban came following the involvement of some national and foreign traders illegally smuggling huge quantity of rice from Sierra Leone allegedly to Guinea and Liberia through the country’s porous border entering points earlier yesterday.

In a press statement issued by the ministry yesterday, the ugly act by the traders is described as criminal, noting that with rice being the stapple food in Sierra Leone, the county is spending a substantial portion of its foreign reserve on its importation.

It went on that it is a matter of national security when essential commodities like rice is not available on the market in Sierra Leone. This according to the ministry was why the Government of Sierra Leone made very huge concessions including, but not limited to, removal of taxes on the importation of rice.

Sierra Leone, the ministry believes, is not yet known or well positioned for huge rice production and is therefore not able to export rice now, so, the practice of smuggling or exporting rice in such a manner will for now be discouraged.
