The aim of the meeting was to bring members together for orientation about the global network on disaster reduction and to strengthen national capacity for its members and play key roles in disaster risk management and reduction. The workshop was held at the Hill Valley Hotel in Freetown.

The workshop was also geared towards protection of human security and environment and how to manage natural and man-made disasters in the country.

Executive Director Africa Youth Coalition against Hunger, Rachel Sheriff Badu said the essence of the workshop was for institutions to discuss the way forward for the advent of disaster management in the country.

She said they are aiming to eradicate disasters in the country and are hoping for the effectiveness of the network, adding that women and children are the most vulnerable people in disaster-prone areas.

“We want to eradicate it and we want agencies to support ONS in giving funds for an activity to help eradicate disasters in disaster-prone areas,” she said.

Sierra Leone like any other country over the years has been finding it difficult with the prerequisite to manage emergencies when disasters occur.

The National Security Coordinator in the Office of National Security, Rtd. Brig. John Jah-Tucker commended GNDR for developing a strong approach of cooperation within the public sector in disaster risk reduction through effective management.

Country Director ActionAid Mohamed Sillah called on government to provide sufficient resources to embark on disaster prevention.
