Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has assured the public that the 2026 Census will be open and transparent. In a statement released on last Wednesday, the agency outlined the transparent measures it has undertaken in preparation for the upcoming Decennial Census.
In a detailed update posted on its website, Stats SL expressed gratitude to the public for their interest in the census process and encouraged all genuine stakeholders to follow its official platforms or engage directly with agency officials for inquiries.
Since President Julius Maada Bio announced the 2026 Census, Stats SL has been actively engaged in preparations. District Census Committees have been established across the country, along with Technical, Publicity, and Advisory Committees. These bodies comprise representatives from all political parties, journalists, civil society organizations, and key government agencies.
In addition, the agency has conducted open recruitment through major news outlets and social media platforms. To date, over 11,000 applications have been received.
“Recruitment for key census roles was conducted through an open online application process. The recruitment was open to qualified, committed, and dynamic Sierra Leoneans. Applications closed on 15th May 2025, with a total of 11,157 applications received. Shortlisting of candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be followed by interviews, which will be conducted soon,” the statement read.
Stats SL has also undertaken extensive public engagement, with the Statistician General and his Deputy actively participating in outreach initiatives, including the Civic Day Series.
The leadership of Statistics Sierra Leone reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and transparency, calling on all stakeholders to take ownership of the 2026 Census process.
