The first guest speaker, Yewah Kaindaneh read a poem on success revealing that as young women they must succeed in today’s dynamic world and admonished them to apply strength in all they do at home and at work as well as support each other.

She further disclosed that it would take 217 years for the world to close the gender gap, that there is lack of gender equality in Sierra Leone, one of the factors that has held the country back, observed that only two out of 14 Cabinet Ministers and six out of 26 Deputy Ministers recently appointed by the President are women inspite of the fact that women account for 51% of the population.

Yewah Kaindaneh went on to state that laws must be enacted to improve the lives of women, that there is need for radical change reiterating that women must push 100 times harder for change as well as press for progress affirming that changes must start within and points out that in Sierra Leone children are not allowed to sit and discuss with elders.

The second guest speaker, Sadiatu Marah dilated on time which she underscored is a resource that is non-renewable and accused some people of always being late, especially when they are not penalized.

According to Sadiatu Marah, girls and women must value themselves and entreated all to consider time as an opportunity.

The third guest speaker, Adama Njai-Koroma, a successful fishmonger said that women should work hard to support their husbands.

She said she was born and bred at Mo Wharf, one of the slum communities in Freetown and that her father was a Senegalese who divorced her mother and informed that she became pregnant when she was in Form 11 and has given birth to five children and that she is taking care of her siblings.

According to Adama Njai-Koroma, sometimes she buys between Le50-60 million worth of fish and supplies other women.

Earlier in her welcome address, Ms. Isata Melanie Saccoh called on her colleagues to defy the odds affirming that women can do anything, disclosed that the five-year old Illuminating Ladies is an all-female organization promoting women and girls with a membership of 30.

She continued that the organization donates to orphanages annually, mentors girls in various secondary schools, and celebrates International Women’s Day with various activities based on the theme for the year and working together and supporting each other.

Ms. Fatima Warritay served as Mistress of Ceremony; Ms. Sebay Momoh introduced the first and second guest speakers while Christian and Muslim prayers were offered by Mrs. Haja Myers and Sadiya Karim respectively.

In her vote of thanks, Ms. Rebecca Cooper thanked God for the organization’s fifth anniversary, expressed appreciation to the three guest speakers and implored members to press harder to success to make Sierra Leone a better place.
