The suspect was brought into the dock by two correctional center officers and put him on a chair,after ward he rolled from the chair and fell on the ground shouting and calling for help as he suffered from hydrocele (extension of the scrotum).
The Magistrate them adjourned the matter to the 10th May 2016, but the court proceeding came to a halt for up to one hour as there was no assistance for the suspect. The magistrate then call on human right and humanitarian organizations both local and international Non-Governmental Organizations to immediately come to the aid of the detainees at our correctional centers across the nation whom he said are in dare need of life threatening medical attention.
Most of the detainees who are taken to Government hospital in the past hardly survive due to lack of medical attention for them.
During the national consultation on the new bail and sentencing policy and guidelines held on 26th April 2016 at the Kenema District Council hall in Kenema, the Regional Commander East Correctional Centers John A. Kamara said each of the centers has a nurse that provide first aid and minor treatment to detainees depending on the availability of drugs adding complicated cases are immediately refer to the government hospital for medical attention.
A doctor from the government hospital in Kenema at the forum expressed that there is no special arrangement put in place for such group maintaining that they as doctors sometimes go extra miles to save the life of such patients but said such patients are sometimes brought to the hospital in critical condition and there is no body to foot the medication.
Justice Komba Kamanda who was also at the forum called on the local councils, individual, local and international organizations in the district to put modalities in place to come to the aid of detainees at correctional centers in the interest of the nation.
Lawyer P.I.Bangura at the magistrate court in Kenema comment that human right and civil societies groups who monitor the court sittings will not just be seeing shouting when issues come up but to be seeing complimenting the effort of government in such direction.
He said only few parents of detainees that come to the aid of their relative medically when at correctional centers.
The condition of the suspect Bockarie Kormisoma is still in critical condition as he was taken back to the correctional center instead of the hospital.
