Speaking to this medium last evening before press time, Kpawuru Sandy, Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society said there is no ongoing nationwide strike by Red Cross Volunteers.

According to him, a handful of Volunteers decided to boycott the just passed World Volunteers Day celebration but that it was only from the Western Area Branch and not nationwide.

He said the day was celebrated in all the regions, adding that currently, Red Cross Volunteers nationwide are participating in a national flood sensitization event and that includes those in the Western Area.

The secretary general hastened to condemn the unfortunate attack on the Volunteers at the Siaka Stevens Stadium and noted that no Volunteer, including the team leader, Unisa Carew was reprimanded or sacked for the incident or any other happening.

“We have been on radio and TV condemning the act. All the rumors propagated by some people relating to the event or the society are false as for us at the Red Cross, our volunteers are our greatest asset” Mr. Sandy stated.

He went on to assure the volunteers that the Society has never uttered and statement stating that it values the damaged ambulance more than the volunteers that were attacked at the stadium.

He said: “We value our volunteers so much and we stand with them as they are our biggest asset and not materials”.

However, he concluded that the Secretariats and other authorities are working on meeting with the aggrieved parties to ensure an amicable settlement of the ugly development.
