The Executive Director revealed that his organization, Foundation for Development is currently on a fundraising drive in which he is calling on every Sierra Leonean to contribute a minimum of one thousand Leones (Le 1,000) to help eradicate hunger, poverty and joblessness in Sierra Leone. He also called on those in the Diaspora to participate in this fundraising as a way of supporting the country’s development process. According to Sumah, the funds would be used to support farmers across the country with seeds, tools, farm inputs, etc so that they can increase in their farming activities.
Responding to questions on the reasons for Sierra Leone’s problems, the young passionate Executive Director said the major problem of Sierra Leone and Africa is the lack of production and manufacturing. ‘We have been over dependent on imports despite the fact that we have the potential to produce and manufacture; we must change that’, he added.
‘We must produce what we consume; we must be the ones producing our food, clothes, technological equipment, guns and many more’ he emphasized. Sumah said it does not make sense that the country has vast tracks of fertile land but yet inputs food including rice which is Sierra Leone’s staple food. Sumah also slammed Sierra Leone for producing engineering graduates every year but brings foreigners to construct the country’s roads, and other infrastructure. ‘We must change that if we want to develop’ he added.
The Executive Director therefore said Sierra Leoneans must come together to embark on massive agricultural activities across the country. He said this move would help eradicate hunger, poverty and jobless in the country in the shortest possible time.
Sumah said his organization Foundation for Development has a mission to ‘make Sierra Leone self-sufficient and independent’. The goals include but not limited to the ‘eradication of hunger, poverty, joblessness, and dependency’.
