The Deputy Chairman explained that opposition parties don’t receive subventions from government and they find it difficult to survive as opposition parties, more so when the ruling government frustrates opposition from becoming financially strong.

He maintained that the money they collect from the selling of membership cards, dues, and other donations was what they use to run the party, which according to him is not enough for the effective running of a political party.

Dr. Harding disclosed that it is mandatory for all political parties to submit its Audited Financial Report to PPRC and as a party they have been doing all they can to ensure that they meet that criterium. “We were late in submitting our report because we had some challenges with our Auditing firm, but that will be taken care of” he said, disclosing that they inherited that debt from the former Chairman and Leader John O. Benjamin who failed to pay the firm.

However he assured that everything possible will be done to ensure that the party adheres to the call of the commission. He advised that people should not use that as a means to bring the name of the party to disrepute or ridicule.

In his statement John Oponjo Benjamin called on the SLPP National Executive to submit it Audited financial Report to PPRC so as to meet the criterion set by the commission and to avoid embarrassment for the party.  “We are in opposition planning to take power come 2018; we should be seen setting bright examples not the other way round. Our party should remain accountable as it has always been”. He said. Urging the National Executive to fast track the process and submit a credible and audited financial report to the commission.
