A cross section of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Energy has raised serious concerns over the perennial issues of electricity theft and the vandalisation of installations across the country.

Led by the Committee Chairman in Parliament, Hon. Kekura Vandi the Committee visited the Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay at his office on Pademba Road in Freetown, where Hon. Vandi said his team was full of praises for the Minister of Energy for the many major accomplishments in the energy sector.

He said the minister and his administrative and professional team at the ministry were doing something that was worthy of commendation and admiration.

Hon. Vandi however lamented the rampant spate of electricity theft and vandalisation of installations, adding that the Committee was seriously troubled by such developments.

He informed the minister that one of the reasons why they were visiting him was to inform him about steps the Committee want to take by holding discussions with the Sierra Leone Police and the Chief Justice.

Hon. Vandi expressed concerns over the manner in which cases of electricity theft are dealt with by the police and the judiciary.

Energy Minister, Alhaji Kanja Sesay, thanked the Committee for the visit, stressing that he was looking forward to strengthening the bond between his Ministry and the Committee.

He appreciated members of the committee for their support and strategic interventions.

He green lighted the Committee’s decision to hold talks with the Sierra Leone Police and the Chief Justice, adding that he was equally disturbed by the rampant spate of the scourge.

Mr. Sesay recounted cases of resistance from communities to his efforts to provide electricity for them on grounds of political or economic reasons, noting that he would never be frustrated in his efforts to deliver on the instructions of His Excellency Dr. President Julius Maada Bio.

He concluded by saying that his mandate to provide electricity for all irrespective of region or tribe would be executed fairly or equitably.
