Sierra Leone’s healthcare system had been managed over the years without a functioning Dialysis Unit thus causing only people who are opportune to travel overseas for dialysis treatment and the less privilege suffer the fatal consequence.

Head of the Unit at the Connaught hospital Dr. Soccoh Kabia said the dialysis machine is a life supporting system that filters harmful wastes, salt, and excess fluid from one’s blood adding that in short it replaces important kidney functions. Kidney failure is the paramount contagion that requires dialysis treatment, Dr. Kabia added.

He further explained that many people had contributed to the establishment of the dialysis unit and key among them were the First Lady, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and the state and people of Israel who provided the facilities.

The first lady Sia Nyama Koroma said that as a she had decided to add value to the medical system in the country and she understand the complications and cost dialysis treatment a situation she said prompted her to plead to the government of Israel for the establishment of a functioning dialysis unit in Sierra Leone.

A team of 5 Israeli experts headed by Dr. Baratz are in the country and they have completed installation and also trained Sierra Leone medical personnel comprising doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians on the operations of the Dialysis Unit.

It is believed that Sierra Leoneans will now survive kidney failures   and that the unit is expected to give a major boost to Sierra Leone’s health Services.

A 30-year-old woman who pleaded for anonymity is currently being experimented at the dialysis unit.
