Dr. Kanu’s resignation happened as a result of the country’s looming political situation, which heightened on a daily basis, since President Koroma pronounced the date for the forthcoming elections.

Alpha Kanu dubbed himself as the fittest apprentice to replace President Koroma, based on his experience at both party and national levels. He previously served as the Minister of Mines as well as Minister of Information and Communication, before graduated to be the then Presidential Special Adviser.

President Koroma duly accepted, Dr. Kanu tendered resignation as it was stated in the Government of Sierra Leone, press release dated 27 February, 2017.

Abiding by the legitimate and supreme laws of Sierra Leone, a public official must tender his/her resignation, within the framework of the law, for at least a year prior to the date of the election; he/she opted to contest, Dr. Kanu had already  resigned in order to fulfill that category.

There are several public officials within the reigning All People’s Congress, APC, that are currently occupying public offices and they are suitably receiving salaries from the consolidated fund, and they are striving to lead the APC as flagbearer in the forthcoming elections.

Apparently, in couple of days, the public, expecting to perceive series of resignation from members of the reigning APC government, especially those that are currently securing public offices, such as the current Bank of Sierra Leone Governor, Dr. Kaifala Marah, Minister of Mines and Natural Resources, Minkailu Mansaray, Ambassador Alimamy Kamara, Majority Leader of the Sierra Leone Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Rassin Bundu, Minister of Works, Housing and Infrastructural Development, Ibrahim Kemoh Sesay among others.

The current Vice President, Victor Bockarie Foh and the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Joseph Kamara by virtue of their respective offices might not be affected, by the public officials opted to contest in national election, ‘must resignation clause’ in the country’s laws.
