Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency has urged everyone to take immediate precautionary measures to ensure safety and minimise risks associated with flooding, landslides and other rain-related hazards.
The Agency urged citizens to keep monitoring and acting on the daily weather forecasts and warnings from the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet). Similarly, the Agency encouraged all to act on National Disaster Management Agency advisories; and that to avoid flood in prone areas, people should stay clear of rivers, streams, and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.
The National Disaster Management Agency in a statement said: “Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges, secure your property, ensure that gutters, drains and downspouts are clear of debris to allow for proper water flow, move valuable items to higher ground to prevent water damage, report electricity asset damage in your community to avoid electrocution, avoid outdoor activities and refrain from engaging in outdoor activities, especially near bodies of water or on slopes that may be prone to landslides”.
The statement further encouraged people to drive with caution and that if they must drive, they must do so carefully, saying; “be aware of the potential for hydroplaning and avoid driving through flooded areas. Use headlights and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
