The Sierra Leone Police has in a delegation led by the country’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Major General David Taluva (rtd) and UNDP Resident Representative to Sierra Leone, Fredrick Hans Ampiah has visited Ghana to tap into their expertise in transforming the Ghana Police Force into a Ghana Police Service.

Upon arrival, a Guard of Honour Parade was mounted for Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu.

Major General Taluva (rtd) said the quality of the Ghana Police Service has become the standard in Policing in Africa.

According to him, other African countries including Sierra Leone are willing to learn from the innovation and practical leadership that has been in charge of the transformation happening in the Police service in recent years, adding that they were in the country to learn from their Ghanaian counterparts.

He said: “Everyone on the continent testifies to the high standards of the Ghana Police Service under your leadership. The Ghana Police Service has become the standard for the rest of us on the continent”.

He further noted; “we marveled at how the Ghana Police has successfully transformed from a force into a service and has effectively integrated itself among the citizenry”.

He explained that his team comprising of IGP William Fayia Sellu, Deputy Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay among other top officials are here to compare notes with their Ghanaian counterparts.

Ghana’s Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare who welcomed the delegation said he was excited about the visit; noting it is important for the security agencies on the continent to be engaging among themselves.

He said the Ghana Police aims to win the hearts and minds of the people by being the servant of the people as it ought to be, noting the initiatives such the Snatch Them Young Policing which targets schoolchildren, scaled up intelligence-led operations, enhanced visibility as few of the policies making the difference.
