Upon his return to Sierra Leone from ‘Place des Nations’, Musa Timothy Kabba presented a powerful chair to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Juldeh.

The Chair symbolises a world marred by ongoing conflicts, where International Humanitarian Law is frequently disregarded, leaving countless civilians vulnerable. A vital reminder of the pressing need for action.

In response, President Bio graciously accepted the chair on behalf of Sierra Leone, expressing gratitude for Switzerland’s recognition of Sierra Leone’s unwavering dedication to the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Law.

He reflected on Sierra Leone’s journey, having emerged from the difficulties of war stronger than ever.

The 124-year-old chair stands as a testament to resilience and an enduring pledge that for 75 years and beyond, Sierra Leone will continue to affirm its steadfast commitment to uphold the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Law.

At the 75 years of Geneva Convention, the Governments of Switzerland and Sierra Leone served as co-hosts with Minister Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba and Mr. Ignazio Cassis, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland presiding.

Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister paid homage to the work and legacy of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and with particular emphasis on its work with former child conscripts of Sierra Leone’s civil war including himself: “And the most important driving force behind the establishment of the Geneva Conventions, the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC was constantly supporting the victims of those violations, providing mitigating measures and alleviating our great suffering”.

Minister Kabba further said: “This momentous occasion serves as a profound reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold the principles of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). As we pay tribute to the adoption of these pivotal Conventions, we acknowledge their enduring significance and the imperative of upholding the principles they espouse”.

“The Geneva Conventions have stood the test of time, guiding us through decades of conflict and turmoil, offering a beacon of hope and protection to those caught in the crossfire of war. Today, as we reflect on the journey thus far, we must also renew our commitment to these foundational principles that safeguard human dignity in times of armed conflict”.
