Sierra Leone Speaker raps Atlantic African StatesSpeakers of Parliaments

Speaker of the House of Parliament of Sierra Leone, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas delivered a key address at the high-level meeting of Speakers of Parliaments from Atlantic African States in Rabat, Morocco over the weekend.

The meeting was part of an initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation among nations along the Atlantic coast. The focus is on addressing shared challenges, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing political and economic ties between Atlantic African countries.

Sierra Leone Ambassador accredited to the Kingdom of Morocco, His Excellency Alhaji Momodu Koroma, informed the Speaker of Parliament that the Diplomatic ties between Sierra Leone and Morocco has been exceptionally fruitful, adding that there are several opportunities to tap into.

Ambassador Koroma made the statement when the Speaker and his delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Sierra Leone Embassy in Rabat.

The Speaker and delegation arrived in Morocco to attend a four day high-level meeting of Speakers of Parliament from the Atlantic African States in Rabat, Morocco, where he also made statement.

In similar development, Parliament has passed into law with some amendments, the Bill entitled: Tertiary Education Commission Act, 2024, for the development of Sierra Leone.  

The Bill went through proper scrutiny by the Legislative Committee and the Committee of the Whole House before it was passed into law. 

The Bill seeks to provide for the regulation of Tertiary Education Institutions throughout Sierra Leone and to provide for other related matters. 

Also, the Parliament passed into law with some amendments, the related Bill entitled; “The National Council for Technical and Vocational Education Act, 2025”. 

The Bill seeks to solidify   the National Council for Technical, Vocational and other Academic Awards which is now to be known as the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education. It also seeks  to provide accreditation, validation, examination and certification services for awards in certain specialised and professional programmes in formal, non- formal and informal sectors and to provide for other related matters.

The related Bills were piloted by the Minister of Technical and Higher Education,  Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie.

Furthermore, the Parliament debated  the Bill entitled “The Sierra Leone Railway Development and Regulatory Act,2024”.

The Bill seeks to provide for the establishment of the Sierra Leone Railway Development and Regulatory Authority with the responsibility to develop and regulate Railway and cable car transportation in Sierra Leone, to monitor and co-ordinate activities in the Railway and cable cars sector, to administer enactments on Railway and cable car transportation and to provide for other related matters.

Presenting the Bill in the Chamber  of Parliament, the Minister of Transport and Aviation,  Ambassador Fanday Turay highlighted the importance of the bill and requested the House for it passage  into law.

In addition, the Parliament also debated  the Bill entitled the Professional Social Workers Regulatory Council Act 2025.

The Bill seeks to make provision for the establishment of the Professional Social Workers, Social Work Facilities, organisations and institutions in Sierra Leone, including licensing, regulation, and discipline and provide for other related matters

Presenting the Bill,  the Minister of Social Welfare Melrose Karminty acknowledged  the timeliness of the Bill and  further pinpointed the  importance of the contents of the bill. Members of Parliament in their contributions, appreciated the introduction of the bill.
