The managements of Wusum Hotel in Makeni and Street Child, over the weekend held a cultural evening at the Wusum Hotel Hall in Makeni to official launch the Visit Makeni Festival 2026.

Witnessed by lots of dignitaries both local and international, the event was graced with moments of entertainments from a list of local artists, entertainers, and DJs performing for guests.

Alusine Kanu spoke on Street Child’s operation in Sierra Leone, listing its enviable developmental strides towards catering for children in the country.

He said when Street Child’s work began in Sierra Leone in 2008, it was the poorest nation in the world and that today, children continue to face significant barriers to learning. He said many children never complete primary school, leaving school without foundational literacy and numeracy skills.

Street Child’s research, according to Alusine, has shown that poverty continues to be the primary barrier to education, often alongside social barriers including loss of a caregiver, teenage pregnancy, parental attitudes to education, and poor teaching quality.
Alusine said: “Without intervention, children risk getting stuck in a cycle of illiteracy and poverty. Street Child works to tackle this educational disadvantage by empowering communities to transform the quality of primary education provision.”
