In Sierra Leone, Mpox is drawing increasing concern, with over Two Thousand and Forty-Five (2,045) cases documented as of yesterday May 13, 2025. Urban and West Rural territories are experiencing a surge in infections, while areas like the Bombali district have noted an uptick with 87 cases, and Kenema has seen 28 new reports. Of all the cases, a mere 393 people have recovered completely.

Individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable, as the illness can manifest more severely in them. Typically, symptoms appear about a week after exposure, although they can manifest anywhere from 1 to 21 days and linger for 2 to 4 weeks or even longer in those with compromised health.

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has summoned the Minister of Health to brief Members of Parliament on the country’s preparedness to contain the ongoing outbreak.

The session was scheduled for yesterday Tuesday, 13th May, 2025 in the Chamber of Parliament. This follows the last adjournment and is in line with the provisions of the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6) of 1991. During the session, the Minister of Health explained the health system’s response to the outbreak, addressing concerns and providing updates on the steps taken to prevent the further spread of the virus.

Common indicators of Mpox include: A rash, fever, a sore throat, headaches, aching muscles, back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

For some patients, a distinguishing rash can be the initial clue, progressing from flat sores to blisters that may itch or hurt. As the rash heals, it dries up, forms a crust, and eventually sheds. If you spot an unusual rash paired with a fever, dialing 117 is advised.
