Ambassador-designate Philip Bob Jusu, accompanied by Deputy Ambassador Asmaa James and other senior staff, paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Ahmad Awad Sakine, Permanent Representative of the African Union (AU) to the European Union (EU), and Ambassador Dedou P. Hemou of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ambassador Jusu described the visit as a “homecoming,” having worked at the AU for over 11 years, including five years under Ambassador Sakine’s leadership in Brussels. He emphasised the significance of the AU office in Belgium as the primary point of contact for the EU with Africa.

He stated that his presence in Brussels offers another opportunity for Sierra Leone to be repositioned within the Benelux countries.  Achieving this, he noted, would require joint efforts with the AU and other institutions. He also referenced Sierra Leone’s important role as Chair of the C-10 and the AU Peace and Security Council.

Ambassador Sakine expressed his delight at Ambassador Jusu’s appointment, acknowledging his diligence during his time at the AU. He reiterated Sierra Leone’s pivotal international role, especially as Chair of the C-10, which serves as an entry point for Africa.

Ambassador Sakine advised Ambassador Jusu to prepare for the considerable work ahead, particularly in peace and security, migration, NATO, and the ICC. He affirmed his readiness to work with the Sierra Leone mission and pledged the AU’s full support, assistance, and advice.

Subsequently, at the ECOWAS office, Ambassador Dedou P. Hemou warmly received Ambassador Jusu. Noting the timeliness of the appointment, he noted that Ambassador Jusu’s leadership, experience, and knowledge of regional issues would be vital for advancing West Africa’s interests.

Echoing sentiments of brotherhood, Ambassador Jusuaffirmed that the visit solidified the enduring bond between Sierra Leone and the regional bloc. Reflecting on the current global landscape, Ambassador Jusu observed shifting geopolitics, internal economic pressures, and a growing introspection among nations. He stressed that in such a climate, “Africa must stand together.”

Deputy Ambassador Asmaa James concluded the engagements by extending gratitude to both the AU and ECOWAS Permanent Representatives for their solidarity and support, reinforcing the necessity of strong collaboration.

These two engagements were part of Ambassador Jusu’sfamiliarisation tour since assuming his new role.

Ambassador Jusu was accompanied to these meetings by the Head of Chancery, Mr. Jonathan Las-Lamin; the Information Attache, Ms. Betty Milton; the First Secretary, Mr. Aruna Kargbo; and the Third Secretary, Ms. Ina Bio.
