Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, Sierra Leone’s Leader of Government Business, met with Babakov Alexander Mikhailovich, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s State Duma, bilateral engagement between Freetown and Moscow began on June 23, 2025.
Their discussion focused on enhancing legislative collaboration to achieve shared objectives such as political stability, economic development, and democratic governance, emphasising the importance of parliamentary diplomacy. They also discussed establishing formal communication channels between their respective legislative bodies.
The meeting also explored opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investment in critical sectors, including agriculture, mining, energy, health, and IT. The officials addressed the need for legal frameworks to attract foreign investment and foster joint ventures.
Additionally, they discussed global challenges like climate change, food insecurity, and peacebuilding, highlighting the role of legislatures in promoting democratic values, human rights, and sustainable development through joint legislative action.
To ensure continued collaboration, the meeting concluded with plans to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establish a joint working group, and schedule follow-up meetings.
Following this, Hon. Nyuma met with Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov. This meeting reaffirmed diplomatic relations and expressed gratitude for Russia’s continued support, particularly in education programs and COVID-19 aid.
Russia confirmed its intention to reopen its embassy in Freetown, underscoring a mutual commitment to multilateral cooperation and a deeper international partnership.
