The Sierra Leone Social Health Insurance Scheme (SLeSHI) has started a nationwide accreditation exercise for healthcare facilities, beginning in the Southern Region.
According to SLeSHI, the process is intended to assess whether health facilities meet minimum national standards relating to patient safety, infrastructure, staffing, medical supplies, and data management. The initiative is also tied to the government’s wider goal of achieving universal health coverage.
A team of supervisors and assessors held an orientation session in Bo on Sunday, 17th August 2025, before being deployed to four districts in the south. On Monday, 31 assessors were assigned across Bo (11), Bonthe (6), Moyamba(7) and Pujehun (7).
SLeSHI’s Team Lead, Dr. Michael Amara, told participants that assessors would interact with health workers, patients, and administrators during the visits. He said the teams are expected to provide feedback highlighting both strengths and areas needing urgent improvement.
Supervisors will oversee the process to ensure it follows national guidelines and remains consistent across facilities.
The accreditation is expected to extend to other regions in the coming weeks, giving SLeSHI a clearer picture of the readiness of facilities ahead of its full implementation.
