Sierra Leone’s leading telecommunications provider Africell has launched the 2nd edition of the Freetown Marathon at their Beach Sport arena.
The marathon, which will take place on Sunday, December 10, 2023, is expected to attract a good number of runners from across Sierra Leone.
The Freetown Marathon is a 42.195-kilometer (26.2 miles) race that starts and finishes at the Africell’s beach data Centre facility.
The race will take runners on a scenic route through the city, including past some of its most iconic landmarks.
“We are excited to launch the 2nd edition of the Freetown Marathon and to continue to support the growth of running in Sierra Leone,” said Africell’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Joe Abass Bangura.
“The marathon is a great way to promote healthy living and to showcase the beauty of our country to the world.”
There are four categories: the full marathon, the half marathon, the 10K, and the 5K.
On his part, the technical Director of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association, Harold Palmer noted that the Africell Freetown Marathon would serve as a yardstick for the All African games in Ghana come March 2024.
He added that the top Marathoner would gain an automatic opportunity to represent Sierra Leone in Ghana’s All African games.
The Full Marathon would start at exactly 6:30, Half Marathon, 7:00, 10k 7:15 and the 5k 7:20.
He said they would like to recommend that the full Marathon medical be conducted at the office of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association head office on Wellington street, to ascertain Professionalism.
