Representatives from Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC) have called on Attorney General, Alpha Sesay to expedite the implementation of Resolution 4 from the Agreement for National Unity.

The Resolution is pivotal for the release of detainees and the safe return of exiles, notably former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is currently in Nigeria.

In November 2023, Sierra Leone experienced a significant security breach when gunmen attacked a military armoury and several prisons in Freetown, resulting in the escape of nearly 2,000 inmates and approximately 20 fatalities. The government labelled this incident as an attempted coup and subsequently charged former President Koroma with Treason and other offenses related to the attack.

Koroma, who served as president from 2007 to 2018, denied any involvement in the events.

Following these charges, West African leaders, through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), attempted to negotiate a deal allowing Koroma to go into exile in Nigeria in exchange for dropping the charges. While Koroma agreed to the proposal, the Sierra Leonean government did not endorse it, describing it as a “unilateral proposition” by the ECOWAS Commission president.

Despite the lack of formal agreement, in January 2024, Koroma was granted permission by the High Court to travel to Nigeria for medical treatment for up to three months. This move sparked speculation about a potential exile arrangement, although official sources maintained that his departure was solely for health reasons.

In October 2023, the Government of Sierra Leone and the APC signed the Agreement for National Unity, aiming to promote political reconciliation and national cohesion. Resolution 4 of this agreement addresses several critical issues:

– The release of individuals arrested, detained, or imprisoned due to alleged electoral and civil protests.

– The discontinuation of politically motivated court cases against APC members.

– Support for the resettlement of political party supporters displaced internally or externally due to political intimidation, attacks, or harassment.

The APC’s recent appeal to Attorney General Sesay underscores the party’s commitment to ensuring the full implementation of this resolution, facilitating the return of exiles like Koroma and reinforcing national unity.

As of now, Koroma remains in Nigeria, with discussions ongoing regarding his potential return to Sierra Leone. The APC continues to advocate for the government’s adherence to the Agreement for National Unity, emphasizing the importance of Resolution 4 in achieving lasting peace and reconciliation.
