The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Collaboration with EPA through the National Livestock Animal Welfare and Rabies Control Taskforce (NLAWRCT) and partners are celebrating World Rabies DAY (WRD) on the 28th September 2019.

World Rabies Day (WRD) is an annual event were actors in the welfare of animals, the prevention and control of rabies around the world organizes different activities to celebrate the gains made and to commemorate the death of Dr. Luis Pasteur since 2007.

Dr. Luis Pasteur is the first scientist who discovered the first vaccine for the prevention of rabies in animal and in human.

This year`s celebration (WRD 2019) is the 13th annual celebration and the theme is “Rabies: Vaccinate to Eliminate”

This year, the “One Health” Partners (Animal, Human and Environment Health) planned celebrating the WRD event in all 15 districts head quarter towns including Freetown.

Just by way of information; the National Rabies Elimination Strategy have been developed by the NLAWRCT, validated and LAUNCHED on TUESDAY 26thSeptember 2017, the Strategy was then finalized in December 2018 including a well-articulated Costed Action Plan for five years (2019 – 2023).

In January 2019, the Strategy was endorsed by FAO and MAF through the office of the Chief Agricultural Officer.

WRD celebration 2019 is part of the implementation of the Costed Action Plan (2019 – 2023) that is drawn from the National Rabies Elimination Strategy (2015 – 2030).


The main objective of the project is to increase awareness on rabies and increase mass dog vaccination coverage nation -wide in all 15 districts including Freetown. 


To increase awareness and enhance responsible dog ownership through public education and sensitization campaign on rabies.

To increase vaccination coverage by mass dog vaccination of ten (10) thousand dogs against rabies. 


To be celebrated by One Health partners on rabies, both at national and district levels in all 15 Districts and Freetown.

The celebration will take the form of public education, community social mobilization, and sensitization and vaccination campaign.

Organization of symposium where actors will deliver speeches and skits will be delivered by school pupils.

Keynote address will be delivered by the Hon. Minister of Agriculture
