The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has refurbished and handed over to the Government of Sierra Leone, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown, ahead of its Strengthening Families Conference (SFC)2025 in Sierra Leone.

The move is part of the Church’s preparations for the 7th edition of the annual Strengthening Families Conference (SFC) scheduled to take place in Freetown. The Church commissioned a comprehensive renovation of the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) at Connaught Hospital, Sierra Leone’s central and largest healthcare facility.

In addition to the renovation works, the Church has donated vital medical equipment to support the hospital’s efforts to provide quality critical care services to Sierra Leone’s over 8 million citizens who depend on the facility.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Elder Isaac Morrison, Second Counselor of the Africa West Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, emphasisedthat the initiative reflects the Church’s ongoing commitment to improving lives and strengthening communities.

Elder Isaac Morrison said, “This project represents our deep commitment to alleviating burdens and bringing hope to communities around the world. It reflects the Savior Jesus Christ, who went about doing good and blessing the people. This partnership with Connaught Hospital is not merely charity—it is a sacred duty to help our brothers and sisters and to uplift lives through improved healthcare.”

Delivering the keynote remarks, Deputy Minister of Health, Professor Dr. Charles Senessie, representing the Minister of Health and the First Lady, said the initiative by the Church falls in line with Government’s objectives to improving quality healthcare systems.

Professor Dr. Charles Senessie said, “The collaboration between the Church and the government is vital for improving health outcomes in Sierra Leone. We are committed to working together to ensure that our citizens receive the healthcare they deserve.”

Chief Medical Officer at Connaught Hospital, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, on his part expressed gratitude for the support.

Dr. Mustapha Kabba said, “This donation is a game-changer for our hospital. It not only enhances our capacity to provide critical care but also restores hope to our community, which has long faced challenges in accessing quality healthcare”.

Hospital Care Manager for Connaught Hospital, Dr. Ibrahim Kapuwa, elaborated on the impact of the project, stating, “With these renovations and the new equipment, we can significantly improve healthcare access for over 8 million people. This is not just an upgrade; it is a lifeline for many in our community who depend on this hospital for their well-being.”

Donation of medical equipment

Alongside the renovations, the Church also donated a comprehensive list of medical equipment, including: 10 Vital Sign Monitors, 10 Patient Monitors, 10 Hand-held Pulse Oximeters, 10 Suction Machines, 15 Sphygmomanometers, 2 Electronic ICU Beds, 8 Manual Hospital Beds, 15 Bedside Lockers, 5 UV Lights, 2 ECG Machines, 5 Infusion Pumps, 1 ABG Analyzer, 2 Defibrillators, 5 Hand-held Dopplers, 5 Diathermy Machines, and 2 Instrument Sets.
