It is a day that is meant to critically examine challenges that are mitigating against their development and prefer solutions.
Celebration of this day was centralized in Sierra Leone for the past years but Aids Healthcare Foundation Sierra Leone, National HIV/AIDS Secretariat, Catholic Mission Hospital Serabu and other partners decentralized the celebration and Serabu had to benefit.
Serabu is one of the deprived communities in the country due to its rough road network leading into the town from all directions, thus darkness overwhelms the community at the expense of children.
Girl child abuse (rape, teenage pregnancy, sexual penetration) according to police and PC JST Kposowa are common in the chiefdom with little efforts to liberate the girls.
In such communities it is simple for girls to contract sexually transmitted diseases but difficult to facilitate their empowerment and fulfill.
The more reason this year’s celebration was taken to Serabu by AHF, National HIV/AIDS Secretariat and other partners. One of the primary aims of AHF according to Dr. Jalloh is to support HIV response work, to protect the health and rights of adolescent girls through sexual education.
As a medical officer of AHF, Dr. Ahmed Tejan Jalloh said among their many duties is to take health education messages to every part of the country without discrimination.
Dr. Kargbo of National HIV/AIDS Secretariat South said children should learn to take informed health decisions to stay healthy. He also encouraged the authorities to create and maintain friendly environment for the children.
Meanwhile, PC JST Kposowa vowed to pioneer and enforce local laws in the interest of children particularly the Girl child.
Two hundred female pupils were given hygiene package each which will last for about six months.
The event at the Serabu Court Barrie was climaxed by drama and quiz competition on HIV/Aids prevention and menstrual hygiene among five secondary schools in the chiefdom.
Smith Ravin Academy Walihun emerged as the victor, second position was worn by Every Nation Academy.
