“As First Ladies, we are advocates for change…”Dr. Fatima Maada Bio tells world’s first ladies in China

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio reminded colleague first ladies, at the Conference about Women’s Education held in Beijing, China, that as first ladies, their roles extend beyond ceremonial duties and must be serving as advocates for change.

The Conference reinforced the first ladies’ resolve to champion initiatives that prioritise women’s education as a means of achieving broader societal transformation.

Dr. Fatima Bio said: “Today, I had the honor of attending the ‘Conference about Women’s Education’ in Beijing, China, alongside my fellow first ladies from various African nations. This significant event took place at the State Guest House, Fanghua Yuan, where we gathered not only to share memorable photographs but also to exchange transformative ideas regarding women’s education from diverse perspectives.

“In addition to our serious discussions, we also enjoyed entertaining moments during a gala performance that showcased local artists and talented children. This interaction not only provided a joyful respite from our deliberations but also highlighted the importance of cultural exchange in promoting understanding and solidarity among nations.

“As first ladies, we understand that our roles extend beyond ceremonial duties; we are advocates for change. The conference reinforced our resolve to champion initiatives that prioritize women’s education as a means of achieving broader societal transformation. Together, we are united to ensure that future generations of women have access to quality education and the tools necessary for empowerment, fostering gender equality”.

First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio accompanied her husband, Dr. Julius Maada Bio to China to participate in the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The couple’s visit marks a significant moment as they join other African leaders to discuss and strengthen China-Africa relations.

The FOCAC 2024 Summit was scheduled from September 4 to 6, 2024 and was focused on the theme: ‘Joining Hands to Advance Modernisation and Build a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future’.

Key events included high-level meetings, an opening ceremony, artistic performances and the China-Africa entrepreneurs’ conference, providing a platform to renew and enhance cooperation between China and African nations.
