Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, visited the Gbalamuya border crossing point between Sierra Leone and Guinea, where he engaged with the National Revenue Authority (NRA) Assistant Commissioner for Border Controls and Management, John B. Amara, and his team.
The meeting provided a detailed overview of the border control protocols in place, underscoring the critical importance of securing national borders while facilitating lawful trade and travel.
The discussions centered on the necessity for a unified, inter-sectoral approach to border security. While existing protocols are effective, tackling transnational crimes, including drug and human trafficking, requires greater cooperation.
This involves closer collaboration among government agencies such as police, customs, immigration, and intelligence services, along with enhanced information-sharing.
“This is a significant step in fortifying our border management systems. It is in our collective interest to safeguard our people, resources, and nation from transnational threats,” stated Attorney General Alpha Sesay.
The visit emphasized the crucial role of intelligence-sharing and cross-border collaboration in tackling illegal activities that affect Sierra Leone and the broader West African region. Attorney General Sesay stressed that securing the country’s borders requires the collective effort of government officials, law enforcement, and the general public.
This visit to Gbalamuya was a timely reminder of the ongoing need to strengthen border security and enhance inter-agency cooperation, ensuring Sierra Leone’s borders remain secure and protected from criminal activity.
The discussions affirmed the government’s commitment to improving security and protecting its citizens from transnational threats.
