The Africa Young Voices (AYV) Media Empire was part of Sierra Leone’s representation at the 2nd African Cinema Summit in Accra Ghana, hosted by the National Film Authority Ghana and conveyed by CEO Julliet Yaa, Asantewaa.

Sierra Leone was formidably represented by a crew from AYV on DSTV Channel 399, Joseph Fiample (JMef) of the SL Producers Guild, Bilal Jalloh, Creative Writer & Theatre Director, Nick Asgill and man of the hour himself Idris Elba.

The AYV Crew was given ‘Access-All Pass’ to Summit, which was a 4-day engagement of continental and global leaders of film and entertainment to discuss the future of African Cinema.

The deliberations attracted professionals from along the entire cinema value chain as this year’s Summit moved past the bells and whistles to tackle the real challenges to the development of African Cinema both as a medium to educate, entertain and provide much needed jobs on the continent.

The event addressed multiple areas of the cinema value chain by bringing in professionals and key strategic stakeholders to the table.

CEO of the NFA opened up with a strong charge to all:

Graced by the presence of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

KING OF THE GA and the Overlord of Accra.  The legacy awards segment highlighted notable contributions to contemporary African Cinema.

The focus remains on the value and importance of Cinema in the African context as this year’s Summit hosted global megastar and African superhero Idris Elba who shared key points of his journey and urged creatives to hone in on their craft and their stories.

Along with industry vetted guest speakers and panellists from financing, production, distribution, exhibition and policy, student filmmakers were also encouraged to attend and participate.

The call for collective efforts in collaboration, policy development, resource and knowledge sharing and a continental vision was prominently re-echoed in numerous sessions.

“The National Film Authority Ghana through the African Cinema Summit has prepared an attractive table for African Filmmakers and Cinema business professionals to partake. The onus is now on the Film Authorities and Cinema bodies across the other African nations to hear the call.” commented Nick Asgill. “We must also not come to the table empty handed, this is not charity: let’s do business.” he concluded.

The African Cinema Summit is an annual gathering of film and cinema thought leaders and stakeholders’ holders to share yearly data and facts to create a playbook for successful revitalisation and development of African Cinema.
