Bridging cultures and opportunities: CRSG’s Open Day showcases commitment to youth development in Sierra Leone

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the China Railway Seventh Group (CRSG) held an impressive Enterprise Open Day themed “Boundless Culture, Shared Youth” at their Mongbegba Headquarters. This event marked a significant cultural exchange program with students from Freetown Polytechnic and was designed to foster collaboration between educational institutions and enterprises in Sierra Leone. It showcased not only the company’s capabilities but also its commitment to vocational education and youth development in the region.

The Open Day served as an important platform for students to learn about CRSG’s rich history, its development process, and significant contributions to social welfare across Sierra Leone. Delegates from the university were given an in-depth introduction to the company’s business achievements and current operations. In addition to this informative session, the students engaged with CRSG’s extensive construction technology and management systems, which are critical to delivering high-quality infrastructure projects.

Wang Bin, the Deputy General Manager of CRSG, emphasized the significance of the event as a connection between dreams and opportunities. He stated, “Today’s Open Day is not only a window to showcase our company but also a bridge that connects dreams with opportunities.” He highlighted how the initiative aligns with His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone’s “Big Five Game Changers,” especially focusing on Human Capital Development and Youth Employment Schemes. Wang reiterated CRSG’s resolve to ensure that human resource strategies contribute positively to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) sustainability.

CRSG has gained significant recognition for its impactful contributions to Sierra Leone’s infrastructure and livelihood improvement. According to Wang, the company has upheld high standards in the completion of various projects, creating numerous job opportunities and training programs for locals. “We are delighted to blend Chinese culture with Sierra Leonean culture and corporate culture, especially by transferring vital skills to the youth,” he expressed. This commitment aims to empower local talent and provide them with a brighter future through career advancement opportunities.

Dr. Samba Morriba, Principal of Freetown Polytechnic, thanked the China Railway Seventh Group (CRSG) for inviting his instituion to be a part of this important event and commended the People’s Republic of China for its unwavering support for Sierra Leone’s economic development. He acknowledged that cultural exchanges play a vital role in promoting global unity and fostering peace among nations. Dr. Morriba remarked that events such as these offer educational benefits that allow individuals to appreciate the diversity and richness of various cultures. He further mentioned that his institution has entered into a partnership agreement with CRSG to enhance these collaborative efforts.

The Human Resource Director of CRSG, Su Xinming, reiterated the company’s commitment to recruiting talented vocational professionals across various fields, including civil engineering, construction machinery operation, automotive repair, and sales. He stressed the importance of adhering to labor laws and maintaining a fair and safe work environment for all employees. Through thorough institutionalized practices, CRSG ensures that employee rights are protected and that staff members can thrive professionally.

During the Open Day, students toured CRSG’s facilities, including the heavy-duty vehicles and machinery complex located at Songo, where they learned about sales, service, and spare parts for Sinotruks and other machinery. The hands-on experience provided the students with valuable insights into the operational aspects of a leading construction company.

Abdul Richard Fofanah, Assistant Site Manager of the Rehabilitation of City and Provincial Township Roads project, shared his own transformational journey within CRSG. A graduate who joined the company without prior experience, Fofanah spoke about how the organization has enabled his professional growth and provided him with extensive learning opportunities. “CRSG is not just a construction company; it is a platform of opportunity, learning, and service,” he elaborated, recounting his involvement in significant infrastructural projects that have drastically improved transportation and access for local communities.

Fofanah lauded CRSG for investing in employees through comprehensive training programs and global exposure, asserting that such initiatives yield real career growth and instill a sense of pride among workers. “To the youth out there, let CRSG be a source of inspiration,” he urged. His call to action resonated strongly, reminding stakeholders present of the importance of collaboration in building a stronger and more connected nation.

With an operational presence since 2007, CRSG has established itself as a comprehensive engineering and construction enterprise, to date, the company has delivered infrastructure projects with a cumulative contract value exceeding USD 2 billion. Their completed and ongoing projects have already made a remarkable impact on Sierra Leone’s road network and socio-economic landscape.
