The training project goal is to build the capacity of National Master Trainer to ensure Pediatric Nursing is improved. Participants at the end of the training are expected to understand “Partner Nursing Training System” as implemented at the Red Cross Kumamoto hospital, and to be able to develop Action Plan on Infection control and safety precaution in hospital.

Sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) participants drawn from Sierra Leone were selected from various strategic units at the Ola During Children’s hospital: Matron’s Office, Emergency Unit, Training Coordinator office, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

During the training held in the conference room at the Pediatric Medical Centre, Kumamoto hospital, participants were trained on Human Resource Development focusing on career development, continuous education system, current situation on the management of nursing care, measures against nosocomial infection standard prevention, measures at the time of outbreaks, management of medical waste, surveillance and rules on hand-wash, stock control, and disaster management among other key professional areas of interest.

Other highlights include presentation on the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and the role of nurses, by Matron Hossinatu Koroma, field trips to places of interest and a visit to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward, delivery room and newborn nursery, Family nursing and Pediatric emergency nursing also formed part of the training which attracted the Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto hospital in Japan.

Participants were assigned to work in various Pediatric units during the training, taken on Helicopter Emergency Medical Service linked with the country’s Fire Force service, and participated in a lot of new innovations in nursing care and management to be adopted in Nursing. Participants and nurses at host hospital during the training were also able to share view and experience on Pediatric Nursing Care and develop partnership for further cooperation.

The Red Cross Kumamoto hospital has pledged to help and boost the health care system by assigning a Bio-medical Engineer and a Chief Nurse in Sierra Leone to further strengthening collaboration.
