The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, H.E Amb. Wang Qing has revealed that Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh is a successful example of the outcome of investment in Public Education.
Ambassador Wang Qing made the revelation during 2023 Ambassador Bursary Award Ceremony where hundreds of deprived students benefited from the bursary package.
Ambassador Wang Qing, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, Deputy Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Hindowa Buakai Bindi and others attended the meeting
Pointing out the successes of investment in education, he cited the Chief Minister, Dr. Moinina Sengeh as a fine example of a successful beneficiary of Public Education, Amb Qing said: “In Sierra Leone, there are also some successful examples. One of them is Hon. Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, through his studies at Harvard University and MIT, has utilised advanced technology to solve problems in the medical field, in the application of 3D printing technology to improve the accessibility of individualized medical solutions. Recently he tweeted “I went to Prince of Wales Secondary School-a public government owned school. If I could go from there to Harvard and MIT and return back as Chief Minister, why couldn’t YOU be whatever you want to be, no matter your background? Public education is the greatest gift we can receive”. In addition, he is the main implementer of President Bio’s “Free Quality Education” during his tenure as minister of basic and senior secondary education. Then he was named the “Best Minister” in the world at the World Government Summit 2023 in Dubai.”
On behalf of the Chinese Embassy, he expressed excitement to see the great achievement of Education in recent years.
Expressing appreciation on the gains made towards education, he affirmed that His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has made “Free Quality Education” the flagship program of the New Directions Agenda in his first term.
“In the last five years, Sierra Leone passed the Basic and Senior Secondary Education Act 2023, enrolment has increased by 37%, enrolment in the West African Senior Secondary School Examination (WASSCE) has increased by 478%, and the pass rate has increased to more than 77%. All of these have benefited millions of students and laid a solid foundation for Sierra Leone’s development in the future.” Amb. Qing stated.
He described Education as a cornerstone for individuals to achieve self-fulfilment and make one’s future.
