The Freetown City Council (FCC) in Sierra Leone has commenced the demolition of structures constructed on illegally reclaimed land at Kroo Bay.
The Council said the ‘land, created using waste deposits, has been a major source of pollution for the ocean and beaches, adding that those living on that ‘reclaimed land’ are very exposed to the risk of flooding and the risk of being washed into the ocean by high tides.
The demolition, the Council stated, follows a series of community engagements with residents, adding that the Council will engage over 200 Kroo Bay residents (including those who lived in the demolished structures) in a year-long project to plant 75,000 mangroves in the community, which is part of the Freetown-The-Tree-Town World Bank funded project.
