Fresh from Umrah, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, who doubles as Head of Sierra Leone’s energy sector, visited Kamakwie with a team of expert engineers to assess a site for a new 40 MVA (36 MW) solar PV plant.
This facility is designed to enhance the 33KV BUSBAR Côte d’Ivoire-Liberia-Sierra Leone-Guinea (CLSG) Interconnector substation located in Kamakwie, inspired by the visionary leadership of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.
This initiative, championed by Dr. Yumkella and the Ministry of Energy, aims to bring electricity to over seven communities in the Kareneh District. The target for commissioning and delivering the first power is set for 12 months from the start date.
This ambitious project, supported by “Release by Scatec,” a Norwegian company in collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone, is on the brink of realization.
At a gathering in Court Barry, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella emphasised the importance of community ownership, reaffirming President Bio’s commitment to ensuring sustainable and sufficient energy access for all, regardless of location or political affiliation.
