The new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, held a productive discussion with European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib.
The personalities discussed the urgent challenges in the Sahel region and further express a commitment to strengthening collaboration for meaningful progress.
After he is elected Chairman, Dr. Bio expresses eagerness to strengthen our collaboration and work together towards a prosperous and thriving sub-region that benefits all.
Bio’s election comes at a crucial time for ECOWAS as the bloc works to address issues of regional security, democratic governance, and economic cooperation.
The Sahel is a vast, semi-arid region of Africa, forming a transitional zone between the Sahara Desert to the north and the wetter savannas to the south. It stretches across the continent, from Senegal in the west to Eritrea in the east. This region faces numerous challenges, including climate change, political instability, and food insecurity, exacerbated by high poverty and population growth.
