The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has announced a load-shedding schedule for March 2025 due to a significant reduction in power generation.
EDSA made this revelation in a widely circulated notice on social media on Monday, 10th March, 2025. The authority explained that the Bumbuna hydroelectric plant, one of the main sources of electricity, is currently operating at less than a quarter of its peak capacity, leading to a shortfall in supply.
EDSA, which relies on electricity from Bumbuna, Karpower, and EGTC’s Kingtom generators, further stated that additional capacity from the Blackhall Road generators will become available once ongoing repairs are completed. However, at present, only 65 percent of the peak electricity demand in the Western Area can be met, making load-shedding necessary.
To manage the power shortage, EDSA has introduced a rotational supply system, ensuring that hospitals and key government locations such as the President and Vice President’s lodges, as well as the Sister Mess Hospital, receive prioritized electricity access. No customer will experience a continuous outage exceeding 72 hours.
During the daytime, electricity will be supplied for up to ten hours in key commercial and industrial areas, including the Central Business District, Cline Town, Blackhall Road, and hotels in Aberdeen and Lumley.
Strategic hospitals and essential government facilities will receive up to twelve hours of electricity daily. At night, power supply will follow a rotational schedule, providing nine hours of electricity every other night to various residential and commercial areas, including Wilkinson Road, Signal Hill, Aberdeen, Congo Cross, Kissy Police Barracks, Funkia, Goderich, Waterloo, and other locations.
EDSA has advised the public to remain informed about the load-shedding schedule and to report any unannounced outages lasting beyond 72 hours. The authority has also issued a warning against attempts to bribe officials to manipulate the schedule, stating that strict disciplinary measures will be enforced against any staff involved in such practices.
