The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has launched a widespread meter inspection campaign in Freetown, aimed at apprehending individuals engaged in electricity theft.
Video footage circulating online shows EDSA staff conducting active meter inspections, revealing what they claim to be a significant problem of illegal electricity connections. According to reports from the inspection teams, a staggering 80% of inspected meters in Freetown have been tampered with or illegally connected to multiple power sources.
One video, shared online depicts inspectors at Signal Hill discovering a residence with a single-phase meter illegally connected to two supply plugs. The meter was also found to be tampered with, allowing the household to consume electricity without payment.
EDSA has issued a stern warning, stating that they are prepared to publish the names and addresses of electricity thieves on social media platforms. The authority urged the public to refrain from illegal connections, emphasizing that lost revenue hinders efforts to improve electricity supply for all citizens.
Citizens are also advised against tampering with their meters, as EDSA inspection teams are actively conducting checks throughout the city. Those found guilty of electricity theft will face the full force of the law.
