Sierra Leone’s Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has secured $12.5 million and NLe7,439,818 in new funding from international partners to enhance environmental protection and regulatory enforcement across the country.
According to the EPA’s 2024 Annual Report, this financial boost will support initiatives aimed at combating pollution, strengthening climate resilience, and improving compliance with environmental laws.
The agency’s financial performance in 2024 exceeded expectations, with internal revenue reaching NLe148,345,620.34, surpassing its projected budget. Meanwhile, total expenses amounted to NLe97,023,439.12, covering personnel costs, environmental monitoring, and capital expenditures. Looking ahead, the EPA has projected a total revenue of NLe184,950,000 for 2025, positioning itself for expanded operations.
“EPA is steadfast in its resolve to fortify its strategies, broadenits sphere of influence and guarantee a sustained contribution to Sierra Leone’s development in the future,” the report states.
The report also highlights the agency’s intensified enforcement efforts, including the demolition of 136 illegal dredges involved in illicit mining, the issuance of 62 new Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) permits, and the completion of 983 monitoring inspections and audits. These measures reflect the EPA’s firm stance against environmental violations, particularly in mining and industrial sectors.
As Sierra Leone faces growing environmental challenges, the EPA’s success in securing funding and intensifying enforcement underscores its role as a key driver of sustainable development. With increased financial backing and a robust regulatory framework, the agency is poised to lead the country’s efforts toward a cleaner, healthier environment.
