Although a good number of women were chosen to contest for parliamentary and councilor seats in the various parties, the reality is that, it is just not enough taking into consideration the fact that, women make up for at least 52% of the population in Sierra Leone.
Speaking to this press in a recent snap interview, the Unity Party (UP) presidential candidate, Femi Claudius Cole stated that inasmuch as women are now in sensitive positions of trust in the current government, there is room for improvement. She said that for the past fifty six odd years Sierra Leone has been predominantly ruled by men, adding that this time round, the electorate should consider electing a woman to lead this country.
According to her, the time for women to take over the reins of power is now and that she is grateful for the support she is currently enjoying from women rights groups and affiliated groups who believe that women can do better than their male counterparts if given the opportunity.
She went further to say that before even thinking about launching a political party she has been going around the country providing free health services to vulnerable people across the country. She said that one thing which came out vividly was the fact that everywhere she went she noticed that the living conditions of most people remained the same even though the country boasts of being rich in mineral resources.
She maintained that it is not good enough to hear that our country is rich in mineral resources but that this should reflect on the lives of the people especially those who have little or no access to government ministers and friends in high places.
She called on all women in Sierra Leone to support their fellow woman, noting that when this is done, the possibility of a woman like herself becoming president after the March 7, 2018 elections would be more probable. She also extended her gratitude to the thousands of men across the country who support her and have reassured her that they too are looking up to a woman becoming president of Sierra Leone as they are tired of men who have ruled the country for the past fifty years with nothing much to show for it.
