The Allied Health Professions’ Council of Sierra Leone, with technical support from the individual advisory board and Ministry of Health stakeholders, has on this Saturday conducted its first licensure examination in the country for allallied health professionals.

The rationale behind this is to have allied health professionals practice under a regulatory council to harmonize and maintain standards and increase local and international recognition for its members. In the Eastern region, the examination took place at the government secondary school with a total of 320 professionals from Kailahun and Kenema.

The Allied Health Professions Council Sierra Leone is a newly established regulatory body, mandated by the Act of Parliament, Act No. 8 of the Allied Health Professions ’Council Act, 2022. To regulate and issue licenses and ensure the standards of practice of its members. It also regulates allied health facilities and allied health training institutions in Sierra Leone.

The exam is for all allied health professionals, like community health professionals, public health, environmental, ophthalmic, nutritionists, rehabilitation specialists, clinical psychologists, medical laboratory scientists, radiologists, health administration practitioners, and anaesthesiapractitioners. It gives members the autonomy to operate a registered allied health facility under his/her license.

Without a license, moving forward, no allied health professional is allowed to practice his or her profession.

A member of the Advisory Board, Allied Health Council, Michael Kposowa, said this is a significant step towards ensuring quality healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone, adding that the Allied Health Professionals Council has embarked on a mission to regulate and license allied health professionals across the country.

He said the examinations are a crucial step towards guaranteeing that the professionals have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide quality healthcare services to the citizens of Sierra Leone.

The Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) is a regulatory body that oversees and governs the practice of allied health professionals. It establishes standards for education, training, and professional conduct, ensuring quality service delivery within the field. The AHPC’s functions include registration and licensing of allied health professionals, accreditation of training programs, and disciplinary control over practitioners.

The AHPC is responsible for registering and licensing qualified allied health professionals, maintaining a register of practitioners. It accredits educational programs and institutions that train allied health professionals, ensuring they meet the required standards.

The AHPC sets and enforces standards of practice, competence, conduct, and ethics for registered professionals. It has the authority to investigate complaints, conduct disciplinary hearings, and take appropriate action against professionals who violate the regulations.

The AHPC may also oversee and regulate continuing professional development (CPD) programs for registered professionals to ensure they stay up-to-date with the latest knowledge and skills. Examples of Allied Health Professionsinclude Physiotherapists, Radiographers, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Dietitians, Medical Laboratory Scientists, and Many others.

The AHPC plays a crucial role in maintaining public safety and ensuring that allied health professionals provide competent and ethical care. Regulating the profession helps to build public confidence in the quality of healthcare services.
