In a significant diplomatic reshuffle, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Ambassador Mohammed Foday Yumkella as the new envoy to Guinea.

This decision follows a recent scandal involving the former ambassador, Alimamy Bangura, who was implicated in a major drug trafficking incident.

On January 13, 2025, Guinean authorities intercepted a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leonean Embassy in Conakry. The vehicle was found carrying seven suitcases containing substances suspected to be cocaine, along with approximately $2,000 in cash. The driver and another occupant were arrested at the scene. Ambassador Bangura, though not present during the incident, was subsequently recalled to Freetown for a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.

Foreign Minister Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba emphasized the government’s commitment to a thorough investigation, stating that all responsible parties would be held accountable. He also noted that while Ambassador Bangura was not in the vehicle at the time of the seizure, a detailed account of the incident was necessary to uphold the integrity of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic missions.

The appointment of Ambassador Yumkella aims to restore confidence and strengthen diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and Guinea.

This incident has underscored the challenges West African nations face in combating drug trafficking and the importance of vigilance within diplomatic channels. Both Sierra Leone and Guinea have pledged to collaborate closely to address transnational organized crime and prevent future occurrences that could jeopardize regional stability.
