Councilors of the Freetown City Council have nominated and approved Councilor Ahmed Karim Bangura of Ward 443 in Aberdeen, as acting Mayor for the municipality.
Chief Administrator of the Freetown City Council, Festus Kallay said the decision was reached because as a council, they have important pending activities that cannot be held in the absence of a sitting mayor.
Prior to his appointment, Acting Mayor Bangura has served as the Deputy Chairman in the Environmental Management Committee of the Council, the Tourism Development and Job Creation Committee (Member) and the Youth and Sports Committee respectively.
Councillor Bangura is the longest serving Councillor in the Council. He said: “The elections are over, and it is now time for development”, whilst urging the APC Councillors to join efforts in the city’s development.
He also explained how he took responsibility for beautifying all the roundabouts in the Aberdeen Communities and conveyed his commitment to finalising unfinished business, ensuring that Freetown becomes a tourist-friendly city this time around.
Earlier, Local Ward Councillors, Mayors and Chairpersons of Local Councils across Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown, who were elected at the June 2023 elections to represent the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party, boycotted the government’s planned swearing-in ceremony in continuation of their protest of passive resistance against the Bio-led government, after the APC party declared the election results as fraudulent.
The boycott by the APC Freetown local council politicians, was also a show of solidarity with the party’s executives and elected parliamentarians, who a few months ago said they will not engage in any form of governance involving the ruling SLPP and the Bio-led government, in protest at the election results announced by the Electoral Commission which the APC said was rigged in favour of President Bio.
Meanwhile, the opposition APC leadership has accepted the United States and Commonwealth Secretariat’s proposal for dialogue to end Sierra Leone’s deepening political crisis.
