Freetown Mayor, Korean Ambassador discuss ‘Transform Freetown’

Mayor of Freetown, Her Worship Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr yesterday 20th January, 2024, held discussions with theKorean Ambassador to Nigeria and Sierra Leone, His Excellency, Kim Pankyu, in Abuja.

After the closed-door discussions, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr said: “I had the opportunity to share with the Ambassador our Transform Freetown – Transforming Lives Development Agenda and the possibility of developing a city-to-city partnership with a Korean city to strengthen ties between our two countries at the sub-national level. Very importantly, we engaged on the NewCity Hall building and agreed on providing further training support to the city’s technical team to ensure continued effective maintenance of the building five years after Freetown City Council moved in. Really excited about our continued partnership”.

The Transform Freetown Project aims to Transform Freetown through 11 priority sectors using an inclusive approach, underpinned by innovation and data-driven performance management.

It also supports development in Freetown, Sierra Leone in the areas of Environmental Management, Urban Planning and Housing, Education, Skills Development, Job Creation in the Tourism Industry, Disability, Health and Sanitation. It will look to support the broad range of activities listed above that will mitigate the effects of global climate change and global warming. It primarily look to raise funds in the United States that can support these goals in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone remains among the world’s poorest countries, ranking 180th out of 187 countries in the United Nations Human Development Index in 2011. Sierra Leone has made considerable progress since the end of the civil war in 2002, consolidating peace, democracy and improving development indicators amid rising rates of economic growth.

It feel Transform Freetown Inc.’s goal of providing provide support to the region can be an important and even critical factor in maintaining the positive trajectory in the progress that has already been made.
