Sierra Leone has achieved a remarkable ascent in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), climbing to 57th globally and securing 5th place in Sub-Saharan Africa, overtaking Ghana, which was West Africa’s most peaceful nation in 2024.

This marks a significant improvement from 2024, when Sierra Leone ranked 66th globally and 8th regionally, a drop from its 2023 position as the continent’s 3rd most peaceful nation.

The 2024 decline stemmed from a polarised socio-political landscape, exacerbated by ethno-political and regional divisions, alongside persistent social and economic challenges.

Sierra Leone’s 2025 rise of 9 places globally and 3 regionally underscores the resilience of its peace-building framework. This progress reflects the unwavering dedication of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) and its partners in fostering stability and unity across society.

This milestone highlights the collective commitment of Sierra Leoneans to the ICPNC’S mission of promoting peace and national cohesion.

The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion in a statement said, “We extend heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, President Retired Brigadier Dr Julius Maada Bio, on his prestigious appointment as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). A steadfast advocate for peace, President Bio has consistently championed initiatives to promote unity and stability.

“The ICPNC is confident that his leadership will drive peacebuilding efforts across West Africa and the continent, cementing Sierra Leone’s role as a beacon of harmony in the region. The ICPNC expresses profound gratitude to its international and local partners, the security sector, political parties, civil society organisations, media, local authorities, community-based groups, and the people of Sierra Leone for their resilience, dedication, and collaboration in making Sierra Leone a model of peace. Looking forward, the IoNC remains committed to its ambitious goal of establishing Sierra Leone as Sub-Saharan Africa’s most nation and among the world’s top 10. With sustained unity and collective effort, this vision is achievable. Together, we can forge a brighter, more peaceful future for Sierra Leone and beyond”.
