A gruesome accident that occurred along the Makeni highway, close to Chinese compound, has left nine people dead.
The accident occurred when a truck carrying palm oil suffered a punctured tire leaving the driver with a lack of control before the long vehicle somersaulted off the road.
“Nine people have been confirmed dead from this accident,” a male voice is heard in one of the videos shared on social media on Sunday morning.
In the video, piles of jerry cans carrying palm oil could be seen scattered on the busy highway and the nearby thereby causing some traffic delays.
Accident along the Makeni highway was on the low in January but there has been an increased in road accidents lately. Last week, another road accident was reported to have many injured along the Azzolini Highway in Makeni City.
Residents of the northern city are urging local authorities to implement stringent safety measures for vehicles travelling on the highway to prevent or minimize the occurrence of accidents.
The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has identified several key factors contributing to accidents on the Makenihighway. These include excessive speeding, reckless driving behaviours, inadequate road conditions, mechanical failures of vehicles, and driver fatigue. The SLRSA has noted that addressing these issues is essential for improving road safety in the area.
