The former ECOWAS Parliament Speaker has pledged the sum of Three Hundred Thousand New Leones (NLe300,000) and two hundred bags of cement for the construction of the University of Makeni (UniMak) Representative Council Office and Students’ Resource Centre.
Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis was the guest of honour for the fundraising launch and turning of the sod on Saturday, October 26, 2024, hosted by SRC Chief Minister Abdul Aziz Kamara and Teneba Marah, Minister of Health.
The historic event was an “exhilarating moment” for Isatu Sow, the Minister of Works, following her relentless effort over the last nine months to materialise one of the major promises of President Alim B. Fornah’s “SRC We Want” manifesto.
Sow, a young and passionate lady, who is pursuing a B.A. in Mass Communication, is not only breaking barriers but also leading by example as an advocate championing the inclusion of women in decision-making spaces for more productive outcomes.
Upon completion, it will provide the space needed to effectively plan and advocate on issues faced by students, said Alim B. Fornah, President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
Apart from serving as a platform for students to conduct research, printing and photocopying of academic works, President Fornah added that the resource centre will also help subsequent administrations of the SRC to generate revenue and implement projects.
Shebora Samba Kamara, Vice President of the UniMak Alumni Association lauded the current SRC leadership for commencing this landmark initiative.
He recalled that revenue generation to implement projects has been the common challenge faced by the previous SRC administrations, and it was noticed during their era in 2012 when they established the Students Analysts Writers Network (SAWN) as a pressure group.
President Fornah reaffirmed his commitment to completing the project before his mandate elapses, with the availability of the resources needed.
In his remarks at the launch hosted at the Fatima Campus Auditorium, Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis says his support for the project is a testament to his belief that “True support for young people requires more than words but standing actions,” he indicated.
He described the building which will feature three rooms, a conference room and a resource centre as a “space where ideas are born and leaders are nurtured.”
