Internal Affairs Minister moves to combat human trafficking

The National Task Force on Anti-Trafficking in Persons Investigation Team met with the Minister of Internal Affairs, Retired AIG Morie Lengor Esq., to discuss ongoing efforts and challenges in combating trafficking, to strengthen the national response to human trafficking in Sierra Leone.

During the meeting, Dehunge Shiaka, Executive Director of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Secretariat, presented the Task Force’s strategic plans for improving law enforcement capabilities.

He explained the importance of periodic refresher classes for police officers, both locally and internationally.

Mr. Shiaka also talked about the hurdles in investigating human trafficking cases, particularly apprehending culprits and protecting victims. He suggested practical ways for increasing the Task Force’s effectiveness and total service delivery.

Responding to the concerns stated, Minister Lengor revealed that he had met with US Ambassador Bryan Hunt to discuss partnership measures to combat trafficking. He explained why they should embark on setting up centers in all regions to better coordinate anti-trafficking activities.

In addition, the Minister advised the creation of a complete concept paper and training calendar aimed at key players, as well as the incorporation of a specialist trafficking module into police training curriculums.

Representatives from many government ministries, agencies, and departments, attended the meeting, and they all gave useful ideas to developing the national framework for preventing and combating human trafficking.
