In a strategic move aimed at strengthening national security and improving emergency response systems, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd. AIG Morie Lengor Esq., has engaged the National Telecommunications Authority (NaTCA) to discuss plans for upgrading and modernizing the country’s emergency toll-free call lines.

The high-level meeting, which took place in Freetown, brought together key stakeholders, including the Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, and the Deputy Chief Fire Officer of the National Fire Force (NFF), Mr. John Santigie Koroma. They met with NaTCA’s Director General, Mr. Amara Brewah, and his senior management team to initiate discussions on establishing a more efficient, unified, and accessible national emergency communication system.

The central focus of the engagement was the review and enhancement of the current toll-free lines used by the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the National Fire Force. The goal is to develop a comprehensive National Security Emergency Toll-Free Line that streamlines access to police, fire, ambulance, and disaster response services.

According to Minister Lengor, the initiative is part of a broader effort to boost the operational capacity and effectiveness of agencies under his Ministry’s purview. “This is about saving lives and ensuring that citizens can reach help quickly and efficiently during any crisis,” the Minister emphasized.

It was agreed during the meeting that a joint technical team will be established to craft a detailed strategy covering short-, medium-, and long-term goals. This strategy will include recommendations on infrastructure, public awareness, and inter-agency coordination, all aimed at restoring public confidence and improving response times.

A key component of the plan is to introduce a single, easily memorable number that citizens can use for all emergency services, including police, fire, ambulance, and national disaster response , thereby simplifying the current system and ensuring rapid access to assistance in times of need.

Director General Amara Brewah welcomed the initiative, expressing NaTCA’s full support. “This is a critical step towards a more secure and responsive Sierra Leone. We are committed to working closely with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to bring this vision to reality,” he said.

The engagement marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety infrastructure and foster a safer environment for all Sierra Leoneans.
