According to Dr. Yumkella the NGC came into the process to promote change; change in many forms including protecting key institutions that are supposed to safeguard democracy and manage the economy well. He added that this was an issue they spoke about during their campaign.

He added that as a party they are very committed to their campaign promises to create an inclusive, free, fair and just society and that it is within that context they watched the drama that was being played out unfold over the last three weeks.

“The first sign that there were irregularities in these elections was pointed out by the SLPP in their first press conference detailing irregularities that they have seen and this was followed by the NGC, C4C and APC,” he said.

He added: “You have the four major political parties in the country pointing a finger at NEC as an institution that is supposed to manage the electoral processes of the country,” Dr. Yumkella said.

He further said that, they are hoping as a society to take the allegations they hear and the cases brought forward as very serious because it is important for the country, adding that the NGC want to emphasize that with expedience they want to rush to do everything because it’s their right as a citizen and in doing that they are also institutionalizing the malpractices they worry about as a party.

These malpractices the four major political have pointed out according to Dr. Yumkella cannot be swept under the carpet even after the election, adding that they will address them because it has the potential of replacing the people’s will with a decision by a handful of people.

“Corruption within an electoral governance structure is worse than even stealing money because you are denying the people the right to choose the person they want,” Dr. Yumkella
