The officials under investigation are the president, secretary general and treasurer of the Union. They are accused of misappropriating funds amounting to Le32billion ($3million), according to a statement from the ACC, dated August 24.

Following the ACC’s announcement, a statement purported to have come from the Labor Ministry was released via social media platforms announcing the dissolution of the executive, prompting questions about the basis for such move by the government.

Lansana Bayo Sesay, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Labor, said that as the relevant official to issue such a statement, he had no idea about its source and stressed that it had nothing to do with the Labor Ministry.

“It’s not from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. As the Information Officer, press releases are supposed to come from me and I don’t know anything about this,” Baryoh said in a recent interview.

He added that the Labor Ministry is investigating to know the source of the statement.

Baryoh further disclosed that the Minister of Labor had held a meeting with a section of the beleaguered Union executive on the fate of the organization and promised they were working towards an amicable resolution of their problems. He urged the unionists to exercise patience while the issue is being handled by the appropriate authorities.

The Drivers’ Union is an independent, non-governmental organization with membership that cuts across the country.

Within the last few years, it has been shrouded in power struggles and allegations and counter allegations of corruption within the executive headed by Alpha Bah. He is challenged by a faction that has always accused him of corruption and mismanagement.
